Your 3MF won't open in Bambu Studio

A 3MF is a zip archive with an XML model inside, so there are two very different kinds of failure. Either the archive is damaged and nothing can read it, or the archive is fine and the geometry inside is broken. They look the same in Bambu Studio — a file that loads nothing, or one that loads and then refuses to slice — but only the second kind is a mesh problem.

Why it happens

The common causes, in the order worth checking: a download that stopped early, so the zip is truncated; a file from another program with parts Bambu Studio does not expect; a 3MF that was really an STL renamed; and geometry that is non-manifold, has holes, or has flipped normals.

How to fix it (about 30 seconds)

  1. Right-click the file and try to open it as an archive. If it opens and you can see the XML inside, the container is fine and the problem is the mesh. If it refuses, the download is damaged — fetch it again before doing anything else.
  2. If the archive is fine, drop the .3mf into the Ferdelance checker. Inspection is free and nothing is uploaded, so this costs you a minute and no account.
  3. The 3D view marks red non-manifold edges and amber open boundaries. If both counts are zero, the mesh is not your problem — look at the export settings in the program that made the file.
  4. If defects show, run Auto-Repair: it welds duplicate vertices, caps holes, splits non-manifold edges and re-aligns normals, then re-checks every part. Your AMS paint travels through untouched.
  5. Export and open the repaired file in Bambu Studio. If it now slices, you have your answer: it was geometry, not the file format.
